Kinja'd!!!

So I was at the stable yard a few days ago and an almost-new E class rolls in, kind of a horrible gungy grey-brown (this was the closest colour pic I could find). The yard is on a popular walking route that leads right around the edge of the town for miles, so there are lots of people coming by. This Merc drives in with Luxembourg plates (first time I've seen those!), pulls up next to our 9-5, a family get out and wander off to a little nature spot down the lane. A little while later I look over to it and the passenger door is open. Not just a crack, just full open. Obviously I have to have a peek inside (not actually getting in) and there are the keys sitting by the gear lever! It did seem kind of monumentally stupid. That would require both passenger to not notice the door was open, and the driver to not notice the keys were sat there. The passenger wasn't one of the kids either which might have explained that part. So I'm thinking it might be some kind of insurance scam. But then I spot that it has a rental car company badge on it! They can't have been that dumb, right? Anyway, a bunch of us are standing around sorting horses out and drinking coffee so there was no point the Merc wasn't in at least one persons vision the whole time, and the family amble back about two hours later - we point out the open door and they kind of mumble a vague and strangely non-suprised thanks, pile in and leave. I'd have thought given all the sensors in Mercs these days it would have detected the open door and had some kind of tantrum...

Doesn't quite ring right with me. The colour enough would have been reason to try and lose it - or is crime so low in Luxembourg that they were used to doing this??

Sounds like you missed an opportunity.

You could have closed and locked up the car and hidden the key somewhere and then had as much or as little fun as you wanted once they returned.

I did consider setting the stereo volume on full and a few other things but luckily there were responsible people around too ;)
